Surprise....Now Run!

I have probably mentioned this before, but I made a decision a while back to "go all out" and stop holding back on my workouts. I used to be nervous about what awaited me at boxing so I would always refrain from getting too tired. Well I took advantage of my Monday off of work to run to BifG. The plan was to run the 1.5 miles to the gym, workout, and then run to Finns where I was going to meet HM and my parents for breakfast.


I thought this was an amazing idea, so I set out a little early Monday morning running my little heart out. When I arrived at the gym I felt so proud of myself. My joy was short lived because when I got there, my trainer told me to turn around and run. Yep. The day I chose to run to the gym was the day that my trainer had us running to the local high school. Basically, back where I started.


Once at the high school, we did various forms of the dirty dozen. We ran up and down the stadium stairs twelve times. Then we did 30 second intervals of broad jump burpees....12 times. Then we did sprints,,,yes, 12 times. I don't know how many miles I ran with the sprints, but with running to the gym, back to the high school, back to the gym, and then on to Finns I am guessing 4.5 miles.


In the map above you can see my morning. The blue line is my run to the gym. The Red line is my run to the high school. The green line is my run from the school, back to the gym, then on to Finn's. By the time I got there, I was beat. I had to join my family on the patio and try not to sweat on every one's omelet. There was a moment where I was regretting my "no holding back" approach. As the day went on though, I was happy to have worked out so hard. What do you think sweets? Have you ever worked out so hard and felt so spent after a workout?

Basement Revamp

Sweets,

I know this is a fitness blog, but please humor me today. Will you? My parents came to visit us this weekend and HM and I have been working hard to get the house in order. We have been working really hard to get our basement redecorated so it is looking good for the 'rents. It started a few months ago when we ordered a couch from Crate & Barrel. We were given a 10 week lead time. That sucks, but it did give us plenty of time to get some painting done.
Can't say I will miss the green couch!

In a stunt that took WAAAYY to many hours, I stenciled one wall. I used the same color in gloss and eggshell to create the subtle look I wanted. It was tough, but the effect was so worth it.



We purchased a TV stand from Ikea and gave it some extra oommph by adding colorful knobs from Anthropologie. I am not usually a big fan of Ikea furniture, but I think the set up looks great.


Eventually our couch arrived. The sucker is HUGE. I might have to become a couch potato! I think the couch is 103 inches long. Hooo Ahhh.


Last weekend we finished up some of the to-dos in order to get the basement (somewhat) finished for my parents. We hung some cactus pictures I took when visiting the MIL in Tucson behind the couch. We framed them in Crate and Barrel brushed nickle frames. I would say they look very happy.


In a return visit to Ikea, we purchased enough frames to complete our two picture walls. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.


In case you are interested in how to complete a project like this, let me give you some tips. The first place to start is to cut out butcher paper in the shapes of your frames. In my case, I wildly bought Ikea Ribba frames the first time. Then I cut out enough templates. I hung them up on the wall until I found a layout I was happy with. Then I nailed through the paper and pulled it off when I hung the frame.

The second wall I planned a little more closely. I used all the templates I had from wall one and created another layout. Then I went to Ikea and strategically bought the remaining frames I needed.

I think the 'rents liked it and we had a great weekend. My apologies for the radio silence over the last couple of days.  I am back in action now.

Greek Night & Arched Brows

Sweets,

I woke up so sore today that I knew I would be taking the day off (from working out). Dang you kettle bell swings! On any other day, I would have given myself permission to skip a workout and then later in the day worked out anyways, but today I had plans after work. I was hosting a girls night which I have not done in a very long time. My friends and I like to eat healthy so we can save our calories for wine and gossip so I tried to come up with something easy and healthy. Greek theme sounded great.


I made a Greek salad with olives, tomatoes, and feta cheese. I cut up pita and served hummus while I baked chicken. The chicken was made with lemon, garlic, white wine, and black pepper. Oh, and a little bit of butter for good measure. Here is the chicken before the oven.

The meal went over well from what I could tell (I made a lot and it was all gone). As an added bonus to this girls night, we had our eyebrow lady come over to the house and set up shop in my basement.


She recently moved away from the downtown area making it a bit inconveient to get our brows done. Yes, we get our brows done. Yes, we all go to the same lady. Yes, she is the only one we trust. And yes, I know how silly this sounds. Throughout the evening, my friends and I took turns getting our brows waxed, plucked, and dyed. I am happy to report that I once again have arched eye brows. Yeah!

It was fortunate that we got on the topic of hair extensions tonight, because "the brow lady" said she could do full extensions for HALF the price I was quoted at my hair salon. Um, this is starting to look more likely. Of course I will keep you sweets posted!!!

The Week I Didn't Wash My Hair

Sweets,

Want to know a secret sweets? I washed my hair yesterday after BifG for the first time since Thursday. Crazy huh? You say disgusting, I say crazy. On suggestion of my hair dresser, I stopped watching my hair everyday. For the record: I still shower....I just don't wash my hair. I was promised by said hair dresser that my hair will adjust and the grease factor should minimize after a few weeks. In the meantime, I have been using gobs of this:

It does the trick, but I am not sure I would recommend it. It is tinted and VERY messy. Like run your hands through your hair and they are dyed brown messy. By Monday, my hair was becoming so skanky that even the toughest of dry shampoos were no match. By the time I finally showered, I felt the need to over compensate so I put on my best duds. Here is my OTD:

As I have mentioned, both the MIL and some of my friends tell me I have old lady tastes. In my opinion, I can pull off more "mature" looks until I get a bit older. When I bought this shirt over the weekend, HM told me it was an old lady shirt. Whatever. Then at lunch yesterday, an older lady in front of me in line turned around and told me that my shirt is "darling". Well damn. I really like it though. So much so that I didn't want to take it off when I got home. I still wanted to be casual so I found the perfect compromise:


 I slipped into my lululemon skirt. I was able to be comfortable while still maintaining my old lady style. After dinner, HM, poodle, and I headed out to the park on our bikes.


HM wanted to bike down the big hill at the park. I agreed on the condition that he walked my heavy beach cruiser back up the hill. He did, so down the hill we went!


I want to put some sort of wash on the above photograph in order to make it look very Norman Rockwell. I will have to add that to my to-do list....along with creating digital photo books.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Like many of you, my long runs are saved for the weekend. HM and I have three more weekends before our half marathon and our track record for weekend long runs is not great. This weekend was no exception. As part of my Kids In The Kitchen commitment, I had to help man a booth at a Girls On The Run 5K on Saturday. It was held at the park by my house and so I woke up early, strapped a coffee to Big Birdie and set out for Sugar House Park.


I can't say I was all that helpful, but I did hang out with some nice ladies on my committee.


We talked to the kids about how to build a balanced meal and we also gave out orange slices and play jewelry for the girls to wear during their run. They had a lot of fun warming up with the jump ropes and hula hoops we brought.


The oranges were a big hit, but we had way too many left over. HM and I went to our new neighbor's BBQ Saturday night and I should have brought the tub with me but I chickened out. I didn't want to be the creepy neighbor that shows up with the bucket-o-oranges. See, HM and I want to make a good impression on him so that we can set him up with a certain young lady. I won't call her out on this blog, but she reads it and hopefully knows who she is. We just need to get her to move to Utah first....

We were not able to go through all of the extra oranges, which is too bad. It is also too bad that attending a 5K as a volunteer/spectator does not count as a long run. Yeah, so that means that my track record for long runs just got worse. It didn't happen. HM and I were busy getting the house ready for my parents visit. I will share more on that tomorrow.

The Birthday Continues

As many of you know, yesterday was Sweating Sugar's birthday. As you also may recall, I started Sweating Sugar after going on an epic hike for a friend's birthday. This same fiend had her birthday yesterday. Weird how that happens.

We decided to celebrate this year's passing with a girls night- thank goodness no uphill hike. My friend Emily (yes there are many of us, hence my nickname Emily the III) decided to host the girls night dinner.

Our friend's  significant other is a sushi chef. This came with major perks when she offered to cater our Birthday Celebration Extravaganza!

The hostess with the mostess only lives about 2 miles from my house so I was able to work off some of the yummy damage by biking to the party and back. The plan was to bike there and call HM when I was ready to be picked up....but I had the urge to bike home...in the dark. I have to say, it was the most fun I have ever had on Big Birdie!!!

Lack Luster Lunches

Sweets,

Well, it is Monday. The start of a new week. Time to start thinking about my diet for the week. Things get more challenging when it comes to my work lunches. Lately, my work lunches have become more and more pathetic.

Let's see, my choices are almonds or a packet of chia seeds

The more pathetic my options, the more likely I am to go out to eat. Usually when I go out to eat, my calorie intake is much higher than if I had enjoyed a lunch from home. This weekend, I enjoyed a lot of yummy food.

I feel like I have been overeating lately. Not pictured is the Mexican food I enjoyed at a party this weekend. A friend passed a really important architecture exam and so it was a reason to celebrate. They had an amazing party with catered food from a locally famous restaurant (Red Iguana) and a keg. A keg is a big deal because you can get them in Utah.......but you CAN get them in Wyoming! Unst Unst Unst.

I worked out this weekend, but I don't feel it compensated for the damage I did. I am excited it is a new week and I am going to pack my lunch for 4 out the 5 days this week. HM usually meets me for lunch one of the days so I want to keep that as an option.

Anybody have any good lunch recipes to share with me?
