Doctor Doctor, Tell Me The News


I went to a new Dr. the other day because I had some health and fitness related questions. After reading the notes I so diligently took during my visit, I'm not so sure he was that great of a Doctor.....

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: The heart is only good for so many beats, and that is it... Don't waste it on exercise. Everything will wear out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; it is like saying you can extend the life of a car by driving it faster. If you want to live longer- take a nap!

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: Oh no. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled from wine, that means they take water out of it and leave the fruity bits so you get even more of goodness. Beer is also made of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of single one, sorry. My philosophy: No pain...good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad
for you?
A: YOU ARE NOT LISTENING! Food is fried in vegetable oil. How is getting more vegetables bad?

Q : Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Oh no! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy?!? HELLLOOOO!! Cocoa beans?!?!? Another vegetable! It is the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure than explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

His final piece of advice?

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!"

Zumba Hurts My Soul

Oh dear Sweets,

Anybody read the fine print yesterday? Well than you know I was planning on going to a Zumba class....and I did. Ouch. Zumba makes my soul hurt. For those of you who don't know, Zumba is a (my own description here) aerobic dance class with a Latin theme. Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, Samba, Tango, Cha Cha Cha- you name it.

Now please know, I don't suffer from low self esteem so this next statement is an empirical fact. I SUCK AT DANCING! Ergo, I SUCK AT ZUMBA!

Little fact sweets, I used to go dancing in high school one night a week. My underage friends and I would drive 30 minutes to a club near UC Davis on the "all ages" night. I thought we were going for the sake of getting dressed up and meeting boys. When we all had boyfriends, imagine my surprise when the plan still involved going to The Grad.

Dude, to like dance. Duh.

My point- I have never enjoyed dancing for the sake of dancing. I was never a good dancer, unless you count swing dancing and I learned very quickly that was NOT cool at The Grad.

Fast forward 12 years- image: me standing in the back of a Zumba class trying to keep up and not pull a shin bone or knock a rib out of place. The fact that this class could be fun for people was not lost on me. There were people having the time of their lives in that room. Benvinedo a Miami. I was just not one of those people. I decided early on that I had no chance of keeping up with Shakira (I was in the back row, but I am fairly confident that was who was instructing the class). I decided to just keep moving and work up a sweat. At one point Shakira screamed, MAKE THIS NEXT ONE SEXY. I am pretty sure she was talking to me.

"Not Like that! I said SEXY"

The closest I got to sexy was when one of "my girls" nearly popped out of my low cut shirt. It was not the highbrow sexy I was hoping for....

The only time I actually approached the choreographed moves was during the Flamenco dance. Apparently that was my moment to shine and really show my talents. So I channeled the same enthusiasm as I had during the boyfriend Grad years and danced my little heart out.....but just like high school, I kept checking the clock and dreaming about my flannel pajamas* that were waiting for me at home.

* Although this story makes me sound like a sad single cat women who cries alone on her birthday in a bathtub each year, I do not in fact own flannel pajamas. Thank you.

HM and His Demon Orbs

Good afternoon sweets,

I knew as soon as my eyes opened this morning that I was worn out! All this working out has been paying off because even Mr. Scale was pleasant this morning! My speed workout left me uber tired, but as I entered my completed run into DailyMile and refreshed my blog page, I was greeted by this:

You may remember this 164 by 820 goal from this post. At the time I wrote that post, I had completed zero miles towards my goal of 164 miles by August 20th (South Valley Half). No wonder I am tired.....we have raced right past 100 miles!!! We have two 10 milers in a row coming up on our schedule. HM is nervous, but I say bring it. I want to see the count hit 164 before race day.

Training with HM has been great and I think he got bit by the racing bug because in all our pictures from Monday's 10K he has a huge dufuss smile. Clearly his hangover was doing better than mine.

Our official time, for those who have been losing sleep over it, was 1 hour 2 minutes and 40 seconds. This was a 10:06 mile. I wanted a 10 minute mile or less pace...............but I did stop to take a few photos mid race......which as HM pointed out, took waaaayyyyy longer than 40 seconds (hey, got to keep the sweets happy). Since I had forgotten my Garmin, we can only assume that we were running AT or slightly below 10min. I'm happy. So happy with HM's enthusiasm in fact that I had to get him a little something:

Yep, HM is no better than me.....a LuluAddict. I did not take this picture of HM.....duh. I stole it from Lululemon's website and you can check it out here. HM actually has bright blue eyes and, unfortunately for him I guess, I never pass up an opportunity to get him in lavender. This color is called Moody Purple and I expect it to make HM's eyes glow like little demon orbs. Swoon.

On the forecast today:

30 minutes of light cardio....elliptical?
Zumba later tonight (optional)

24 Hours

Good Morning Sweets,

Late night for me last night. After dinner I headed to the gym to complete my scheduled weight lifting routine (workout G on the Lifting Love page). Buckley was being a spaz-a-doodle when I got back from dinner. So before I could go to the gym, I had to take him on a bike ride. Four miles later, he was the calm poodle that I love.

So it was late late late by the time I finally made it to the gym. I arrived there about 10:30pm. It was sort of nice to be there when the gym was pretty empty. Good thing it is open 24 hours a day though!

I pushed really hard on my weights which was hard to do because the fatigue of flipping around on a hammock during anti-gravity yoga was starting to set in. Toward the end of my workout, I kept starring at the elliptical, and then the clock, then back to the elliptical. It was already 11:15pm and I was seriously considering skipping out on the 20 minutes (minimum) cardio on my schedule.......but once you allow yourself to start making excuses it becomes too easy. Before you know it, the dumbest things will become an excuse.....well it is sorta windy out today........

In the end, 20 minutes went by fast enough. I am glad I got it done. In about 45 minutes I will be heading back to the dumb gym to get my speed workout done. Yeah that's right, 2 gym visits in less than 24 hours....maybe that is how the gym got it's name!

Today's Workout:
1 mile warm-up (5.0-5.5 miles per hour)
.05 mile speedy (7.0 miles per hour)
.25 walk
-repeat 3 more times-
1 mile cool down jog (5.5 miles per hour)

After logging almost 5 hours of workouts in the last 48 hours....I think I am going to reward myself with some relaxation and produce poolside.

That is HM's hairy arm, not mine. I am a lady, duh.

Womb and Cozy at Yoga


I told you that I would let you know how my first anti-gravity yoga session went. You may remember me mentioning my Groupon deal and thoughts on yoga in this post. Well, I survived. At the beginning of class, I felt a huge sense of dread when the first pose was the "womb" pose.

"Wait a minute, I've been here before."
Let me tell you something sweets. I don't like all women events or organizations (except Jr. League of course). I hate the show Everybody Loves Raymond because it is based on cheap jokes about the difference between women and men (wife nags, husband too lazy ha ha ha, repeat) I am sure I am in the minority, but if you asked me to describe the birth of a child in one word....I would not choose Magical or Miracle.....I would say Messy or ECK. I tell you this to give you some background into my character (or lack there of). So you can imagine that starting off with "womb" pose where we are reminded that "on a cellular level, we remember the tranquility of being in our mother's womb and that we should channel those feelings of security and safety throughout the rest of class" did not set well with me. BARF.

Not to fear sweets, this tale has a happy ending. After that round of garbage was over, the class really picked up. In fact, I rather enjoyed myself! There was some much need stretching and flipping around. We even were told to swing in the hammock. FUN FUN FUN. There were several inverted poses. Not spending much time upside down, this was a cool experience. Some of the hanging made my spine lengthen...hear that sweets? I said lengthen and spine in the same sentence. Wow I am really a yogi now huh? All joking aside....I feel like I am standing taller. Mama likes!

I would rank this class in the top 5 yoga classes I have taken (the others being at my old gym in New York City). I am very excited to go back for another class. Even though it was challenging, I would not call it a workout, so I will be hitting the gym with HM after our dinner plans tonight.

Wine: Not The Best Fuel For A Race

Good Morning Sweets,

As promised, I am going to fill you in on what I have been up to during the last 24 hours. Yesterday evening we had a lovely night at Red Butte Garden enjoying the musical styling of the Space Cowboy.....Steve Miller, duh.

Even though this is my 5th time seeing the Steve Miller Band in concert, it was the best because it was my favorite venue......well that and we had VIP tickets. That meant no waiting in line, special shaded seating, and close parking. Don't mind if I do!

Knowing that I had an early race the next day (start time 6:05am), I carb loaded with what I will now call Italian Tacos:

Recipe - take a clump from the inside of a sourdough bread loaf, wrap a piece (or 2) of salami around the bread and then add a slice of provolone. Eat like a taco. Repeat until you feel too full and a bit ill.

After the overdose on Italian Tacos starts to abate, eat an entire bag of caramel popcorn. Even though the bag says 5 servings, don't share. DON'T SHARE even if your significant other threatens you with a wine opener.

"Nice try. Now pass me the wine I have a popcorn kernel stuck in my throat."

We had comfy seats, the weather was great and there was entertainment everywhere- like middle age white people dance moves.....


We stayed to the very end......something HM and I rarely do. I was a little disheartened to have to explain to my otherwise GENIUS husband why a Steve Miller Band concert was different.

"I know we left early during the Lyle Lovett concert....but this is different......geeeeessssh. And threatening me again with the wine opener will get you nowhere!"

Fast forward to this morning at 4:45am. We woke up and rushed out the door and to the starting line of the Deseret News 10K. BTW, when you wake up and can still taste last nights wine in your mouth, you know it may not be your best race.

I forgot my Garmin and water bottles (not really needed but still) and even though I felt less than stellar, HM and I actually did pretty good. I don't know our official time but I know it will be better than 1 hr 3 minutes......10 minute mile?!?!??!?!

New Lifting Routines

Hello There Sweets,

I slept in today until 10:00 and ooohhh was that great. I could have slept longer, but the beep the coffee maker makes when finishing a fresh pot draws me like a moth to the flame,

or like a blogger to Yogurtland
or a tired housewife to a Curves gym
or a poodle to a chew toy
or a stripper to a guy in an Affliction shirt

You get it right? I love me some coffee in the morning. And blogging. I think I need this print...

I woke up this morning feeling a little stiff. It was probably from yesterday's run. It's nothing that a little non-dairy creamer can't fix I am sure. On my workout agenda today I will be doing the 3rd (of three) weight lifting routines with HM. If you are curious, here are the 3 weekly routines that we are currently following:

The columns (from left to right) are the Exercise, # of sets, and # of reps per set

Instead of dedicating the whole workout to a full body routine, taking about 1 hour and 10 minutes, I am now focusing each session on a couple of body parts and then following the weights with 20-30 minutes of non-running cardio. The lifting routine takes about 30 minutes and then 30 minutes on the elliptical or stairs. I am still spending the same amount of time in the gym when it is all said and done, but I like the extra cardio.

I will be posting the new workouts to my Lifting Love page in case you sweets want to reference them again in the future. They are labeled Workouts G, H, and I. I could have kept the name HM gave them.....which I am not sure he realized would be included on the attachment he sent me:
