Hey there Sweets,
I get to share some very exciting news with you!!! But before I do, a little recap of last night. Yesterday evening was the Jr. League of Salt Lake's annual dinner. It was held at what is probably the most beautiful restaurant in Salt Lake City, La Caille. The setting is amazing and they have peacocks and swans all over the grounds. Like a Thomas Kinkade painting, but still cool.
It was a wonderful evening of great food and awesome company.
The purpose of the annual dinner, besides to socialize with some lovely ladies, is to welcome new members, recognize the in-going and out-going president, and assign member placements. The Jr. League has many powerful projects, but my first choice for placement was Kids In The Kitchen. Kids In The Kitchen is an initiative that promotes healthy eating choices in kids. The obesity epidemic in this nation (especially among children) is something that I have deep interest in. And guess what? I WAS PLACED ON THE KID IN THE KITCHEN COMMITTEE!!!!!!!!!!
I am so beyond excited and I can't wait to get started. I would imagine that there are plenty of things to do. Perhaps the first thing we can do is to incorporate Michelle Obama's new Food Plate:
When I first heard about this initiative I thought it was like fighting a dragon with a cotton swab. As if a new cartoon is going to solve the obesity epidemic. But I have been known to over-react. The more I thought about it, I realized it was GENIUS....especially for kids.
How many of you think about the food pyramid when you eat a meal? For me, it is more of an after thought...as in, how many servings of vegetables did I have today, hmmmmm. It is a consideration I give after the meal/day is through. That is why the Food Plate is so great. During each meal, a person can use the plate as a guide for that particular meal. A consistent string of well balanced meals will lead to a healthier lifestyle. This could possibly be one huge step towards tackling America's obesity problems. Of course there are other components but it is still a big one....and I am so EXCITED to be taking an active roll in this fight!!! Put me in coach, I'm ready to plate!!!
Sweets, what are your thoughts on America's obesity issue?
